In 1803 Sweden handed Wismar to the Grand Duke of Mecklenburg-Schwerin for 1,258,000 riksdaler and reserved the right to buy it back in a hundred years. That is not a sale. That is a pawn ticket, written against a walled Baltic port of brick gables and church towers, and for the next century nobody was entirely sure whose town this was. Wismar sent no representatives to the Mecklenburg diet until 1897. Only in 1903 did Stockholm let the option lapse for good. The town has made an annual festival of its Swedish century ever since, and it kept one souvenir of the ambiguity: the right to fly a flag of its own.]]></description>
