Photo credit Diesel3200, CC BY-SA 4.0. Until a Saturday evening in December 2019, the Copenhagen-Hamburg express did something almost no train in Europe still did: it drove onto a boat. Passengers left their seats, walked up out of the car deck and stood in the wind while Denmark or Germany came over the horizon, their carriages sitting in the hold beneath them. The last one rolled off at Rødbyhavn at 20:02 on 14 December 2019. With it went the piece of theatre that had defined the Vogelfluglinie - the bird flight line - since 1963. The route itself is still there. The road still runs, the ferry still sails, and a tunnel is being sunk under the same stretch of water to make the whole arrangement obsolete.
