Viborg Cathedral: Introduction

Photo credit Colin, CC BY-SA 4.0. In 1863 the people of Viborg finished demolishing their own cathedral. Not a mob, not an invading army — a committee, working from an engineer's report. Four years earlier, surveyors preparing a restoration had concluded that the medieval walls were too unstable to save, and the only honest option was to take the whole thing down and start again. So they did. Then they laid a cornerstone in the rubble and spent thirteen years building a Romanesque cathedral that the twelfth century would not have recognised.
