Utzon Center: Introduction

He designed the Sydney Opera House, resigned from it on 28 February 1966 after the New South Wales works minister cut off the money that paid his staff, and lived another forty-two years without ever standing in the finished building. His final commission was the opposite in almost every way: small, close to home, and shaped around a request from students. It sits on the Aalborg waterfront, in the northern Jutland town where he grew up — the son of a naval architect, a boy who wanted a career at sea before he wanted one in architecture.
