Photo credit Hubertus45, CC BY 3.0. For three decades in the middle of the twentieth century, people came to Ulstrup Castle to look at animals. A four-winged Renaissance manor raised by a Marshal of the Realm — octagonal corner towers, a lantern riding above the gate — had been reduced to scenery for an amusement park and zoo, its estate broken up and sold off by the parcel, the family that built it gone since 1809. Danish manor houses have suffered plenty of indignities, but few quite so cheerful. What makes Ulstrup worth the detour is not the fall. It is that somebody bothered to reverse it.
