Thorsager Church: Introduction

It is about as unambiguous a piece of pre-Christian naming as Denmark offers, and the church that gives the place its silhouette is a Christian building standing squarely on top of it. Beneath the floor, archaeologists working in the 1950s found the remains of a wooden church put up sometime in the 900s or 1000s - which means the hill had been claimed for the new faith while the old god was still in the village's name. Seven round churches survive in Denmark. Four are on Bornholm, one is at Bjernede on Zealand, one at Horne on Funen, and this one, on a low rise on the Djursland peninsula, is the only one in all of Jutland.
