Sand had been blowing across this corner of Thy since roughly 1450, swallowing fields and burying parishes, and from 1889 the Danish state planted Østerild Klitplantage to hold the ground still. It worked. Then, in June 2010, parliament voted to cut a corridor through it — plans involved clearing up to 1,200 hectares of protected plantation — so that the largest wind turbines ever built would have somewhere to spin. A rotor 236 metres across needs more clearance than a forest is willing to give.
