Rold Skov: Introduction

Photo credit Mikkel Houmøller, CC BY-SA 4.0. Denmark is, by most measures, a very safe place to walk. Rold Skov spent several centuries being the exception. Travellers crossing this forest in Himmerland reckoned with robbery and violent assault as an ordinary hazard of the route, and the reputation did not fade quickly, because the criminals were real and organised. In the 1830s the authorities finally moved on what may have been the largest gang of all — more than a hundred robbers, whose court cases dragged on for seven years, from 1837 to 1844. One of the convicted men gave Steen Steensen Blicher the raw material for his novella Bettefanden. The forest still trades on the story. Under the reputation lies something stranger: 8,000 hectares of spring-fed hills that hold some of the richest biology in the country.
