Not the labour of hands - the shape of them, in kidskin, stitched to fit. Glovemaking in this town can be traced back to the 1200s, and by the 1600s it was the chief occupation of the place; by the 1700s Randers gloves were going out to Sweden, Germany, Russia, France and England. A merchant in St Petersburg or Paris could reasonably have known the name of this Jutland market town without having the faintest idea where it was. That is a strange kind of fame for a settlement of a few thousand people at the mouth of a river, and it is only one of several strange things about Randers.
