Photo credit Sebastian Nils, CC BY-SA 3.0. In 1518 the king of Denmark took a young Swedish hostage and locked him in a castle on a small island off the Jutland coast. Gustav Vasa spent about a year there, then walked out disguised as a common peasant, made it to Lübeck, and by 1523 had driven the Danes out of Sweden and taken its throne. The castle he escaped is a ruin now. The five-hundred-metre cobbled embankment he would have crossed to reach the mainland is still there, still walkable, and both sit inside the boundaries of Mols Bjerge National Park.
