The beach at Løkken is a road. Nineteen kilometres of sand run south toward Rødhus, packed hard enough to carry cars all year round, and on a July afternoon they park in rows facing the North Sea with the doors open and the radios on. Behind them stand the white bathing huts — plain wooden boxes, set out on the sand each summer and carried in again before the autumn storms — which have become the town's signature and its postcard. It is a cheerful, slightly improbable scene for a place that spent its first two centuries as a serious working port with no port at all.
