The problem with Løgstør was the water in front of it. The Limfjord narrows here, and where it narrows it shallows: the Løgstør Grunde, a spread of sandbanks that let small boats pass and stopped everything larger. For centuries this was merely inconvenient. Then, in 1825, the North Sea broke through the Agger Tange on the west coast and opened the fjord to ocean traffic for the first time in recorded memory — and suddenly the shoals were not an inconvenience but a wall across a brand-new sea route. Denmark's answer was to dig around them. It took five years to build and fifty-two to become obsolete.
