There is a small white church on an island in a lake at Hørsholm, and around it a park with the faint bones of a formal garden showing through the grass. That is what is left. The palace that stood here was finished in 1744, called the Versailles of the North without much exaggeration, and taken apart stone by stone seventy years later to be carted off and built into something else. Almost nothing survives above ground. What survives instead is the memory of a single summer - June and July of 1771 - when a German doctor who had made himself the effective ruler of Denmark spent the season here with the king's twenty-year-old wife, and the country decided it had seen enough.
