Photo credit Hans Smidth, Public domain. Johannes V. Jensen was born in Farsø on 20 January 1873, in a corner of rural Jutland that most Danes at the time would have described as nowhere in particular. Between 1898 and 1910 he wrote it into the national imagination. The Himmerlandshistorier — the Himmerland Stories — take the farms, drinkers, eccentrics and hard bargains of his home district and treat them with the seriousness usually reserved for capitals. He went on to write Den lange rejse, a six-novel cycle sometimes called an evolutionary bible of mankind, and in 1944 he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature. The region he came from is a blunt-nosed peninsula bounded by water on three sides, and it has been producing outsized things for a very long time.
