The physicist and essayist Georg Christoph Lichtenberg asked, in effect, why Germany had no public seaside resort when the English had been dunking themselves in the Channel for decades. Samuel Gottlieb Vogel, personal physician to the Duke of Mecklenburg-Schwerin, read it and took it to his employer. Duke Friedrich Franz I - Grand Duke only from 1815 - was persuaded, and on 21 September 1793 the first bathhouse opened on a stretch of Baltic shore six kilometres from Doberan Abbey. Sea bathing was not yet a pleasure. It was prescribed: cold saltwater immersion as medicine, taken under supervision, with the duke himself as first patient and first advertisement.]]></description>
