Start with the arithmetic, because it settles the question fast. The mound in Odsherred that carries the name Hamlets Grav is a Neolithic long barrow with standing stones, raised somewhere in the fourth millennium BC. Amleth, the Jutish chieftain of legend, belongs - if he belongs anywhere - to the early medieval world Saxo Grammaticus was writing down around 1200. Shakespeare's prince arrived around 1600. So the grave predates its supposed occupant by something like four thousand years, which is not a margin of error. Denmark has three such graves, in three different places, and the interesting story is not who is buried in them. It is how each one got its name.
