Hald, on the western shore of Hald Sø a few kilometres south-west of Viborg, has five — or rather it has one standing house and the wreckage of four earlier attempts, scattered around the same stretch of lakeshore across some eight hundred years. Earthworks in the woods, oak piles under the water line, a partly rebuilt tower on a peninsula, an empty patch of parkland where a general's timber-framed courtyard once stood. Nobody planned a museum of Danish castle-building here. It just happened, one abandonment at a time.]]></description>
