In the 1930s the local authorities around Aalborg saw no reason to spend money on aviation, and it was Aalborg Portland — the vast cement operation that has shaped this city's economy for over a century — that pushed until they relented. The field opened at Vadum in 1938 and carried the first Danish domestic air service, Aalborg to Copenhagen. Eighteen months later, German paratroopers were falling onto it.

Aalborg Air Base: Flight Context

Photo credit Simon Wedege Petersen, CC BY 3.0. Aalborg Air Base occupies 57.093°N, 9.849°E at Vadum, on the north side of the Limfjord about seven kilometres north-west of central Aalborg. It operates as a joint military and civil field under ICAO code EKYT, with two parallel runways — 08L/26R at 2,654 m and 08R/26L at 2,549 m — laid roughly east–west across flat reclaimed farmland. From the air the site is unmistakable: two long parallel strips immediately north of the Limfjord's broad western basin, with the city, its bridge and its tunnel crossing visible to the south-east and the North Sea coast some 30 km west. This is an active military base with civil traffic sharing the pattern; the airspace is controlled and the base itself is off limits to visitors. North Jutland weather is maritime and changeable — strong westerlies, frequent low cloud, and good visibility most often behind a front.
